Former president of the National Union of Public Workers, Walter Maloney, says trade unions should accept nothing less than a six per cent salary increase for public servants.
Unions which represent civil servants have started negotiations with the Mia Mottley Administration and Maloney said many workers were struggling to make ends meet or pay their mortgages, while others were hovering at or below the poverty line.
Maloney says he has no issue with anyone joining a political party, but cautioned union leaders about being more loyal to their party than the workers. He pointed to a drastic drop in membership because people feel they are not getting the representation they deserve.
Speaking at a media conference hosted by the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) at its George Street, St Michael headquarters last Friday, Maloney compared this period to that in 2018 when negotiations were being held with the then DLP government. (SAT)
