Attorneys for Shawn Leo Phillips, who repeatedly raped and then murdered a young mother who was on her way home, have been put on notice by Justice Carlisle Greaves.

The court is considering imposing a whole life custodial sentence on the convicted man.

The judge made the announcement moments after Phillips was convicted of murder yesterday in the No. 3 Supreme Court.

“Counsel should prepare themselves. I do not know what the sentence shall be at this time, but I consider this matter to be sufficiently serious that counsel should prepare themselves to address me on the issue of a whole life sentence in respect of this matter, having regard to the evidence heard in this case,” he said yesterday.

Phillips, of Chimborazo, St Joseph, had been on trial for murdering 27-year-old Melissa Amanda Davis, formerly of Bird Hill, Haggatt Hall, St Michael, sometime between November 28 and December 5, 2008. (HLE)
