Versatile sportswoman Asabi Callender recorded a CARIFTA qualifying performance on Saturday to highlight the first night of action at the Athletics Association of Barbados (AAB) Louis Lynch Championship.

Competing in the women’s javelin throw at the National Stadium, the 17-year-old Callender who is a West Indies women’s Under-19 cricketer, won the girls’ Under-20 event with a throw of 40.66 metres to surpass the required standard of 39 metres.

Having met the CARFITA standard in previous years, Callender is yet to represent her country at the prestigious games due to its cancellation in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

She also hit the standard last year, however two other athletes were selected by way of better performances.  (RW)
