Barbados’ swimmers put on a fantastic performance on Sunday, to climax the BASA Long Course National Championships, with Heidi Stoute and Brennan Watson displaying their stamina and skills to qualify for the CARIFTA Championships in the gruelling 800 metres freestyle.
Needing to beat the 10:10.48 minutes among the girls’ 13-14 age category, Pirates’ Stoute cruised home in 9:33.53.
Watson, also of Pirates, needed to go under a time 9:45.65 minutes in the 13-14 boys, which he accomplished in 9:43.56. Those qualifications set the pattern for a number of other swimmers to book their tickets to Curacao next month.
In the boys’ 15-17 backstroke, the demand was for a finish of 9:58.99 minutes with Joshua Ross of Alpha Swim Club and Aquan Crichlow of Pirates punching their CARIFTA tickets. Ross won in 9:33.38 and Crichlow followed in 9.48.73.
Golden girl Jaiya Simmons of Pirates, Zachary Burke of Dolphins and Amiya Harrison and Adara Stoddard of High Tide Sting Rays also picked up more qualifications on the final night of action at the Barbados Aquatic Centre. (KB)
