Several St Joseph residents protested at Joe’s River Bridge on Tuesday morning, as work at the old Edgewater Hotel continued.

The long-time East Coast residents, who spoke out against two concrete columns on either side of the bridge which they fear will block access to the Joe’s River gully, were joined by cultural ambassador The Most Honourable Anthony ‘Gabby’ Carter.

He said this green space must be preserved because other areas like Pelican Island and Reef Beach were “destroyed” in the name of development.

“We want this man to knock down that wall and stop the project over there because it is unfair, it is wrong, it is an injustice and I appeal to his lawyer to withdraw from the case. We will be seeking an injunction against this atrocity. This is madness; this cannot be allowed to continue,” he said.

However attorney Faye Finisterre who represented the Australian resident responsible for the development, again said their intention was not to block access.

Richard Haynes, CEO of South Central Marketing, who is working on behalf of the developers Ullswater, said he would communicate with Victor Lewis, the resident who highlighted the issue. He said Ullswater wanted to engage the community and come to a solution that worked for everyone. (TG)
