The Athletics Association of Barbados (AAB) 2023 National Junior Championships showcased some brilliant performances on Saturday night at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex. Most notable was the new national junior record and Under-17 CARIFTA 100 metres qualifying time of 11.80 seconds by 14-year-old Aniya Nurse of Alleyne School.

Nurse bolted out of the blocks and stormed to the finish line without ever letting up on her opponents. Her new record removes the old time of 11.94 set by Tristan Evelyn in 2014. Nurse was also well under the required 11.98 for CARIFTA qualification.

Also qualifying in the Under-17 division were 400m sprinters Ariel Archer, of Rising Stars, and Kaden Dowrich-Roach, of Quantum Leap.

Archer gave it her all to cross the finish line in 57.00 seconds, exactly the time required to qualify for the games that will take place in The Bahamas from April 8 to 10. (RW)
