Coast guard officers cry out for relief

Some soldiers at The Barbados Coast Guard Ship (BCGS) Pelican have raised health concerns after they claim to be bombarded with dust and sand from a nearby storage area near its entrance at the Mighty Grynner Highway, St Michael.

“During the course of the day, we are breathing all of that. The dust gets in our eyes and noses. They talk about health and safety in the workplace but that doesn’t seem to apply down here with us. In a couple of years we may end up coming down with respiratory issues,” said a seaman who requested anonymity.

Another officer at the base, located off the highway, who asked not to be named, said he considered the site a quarry considering all the work that goes on there.  (CA)
