Barbados’ hopes of adding to their record ten CAZOVA volleyball titles were dashed by the hosts and defending champions Suriname when the 18th edition climaxed in a full Anthony Nesty Sports Hall in Suriname on Sunday night.

After taking the opening set the former kings squandered an 18-14 advantage in the second set to lose 25-19, 21-25, 27-29, 25-23, 15-17.  Leading 18-14 in that second set, Barbados did not score another point until Suriname blasted to 21-18.

Barbados almost staged a stunning fight-back in the decisive fifth set where they survived two game and match points to then lock at 14 with a monster block on Suriname.

However, in spite of inspirational spiking from captain Akeel Oxley and middle Akeil Williams, Barbados could not match the fire from Suriname.  (KB)
