Barbados’ water protection zones are being rezoned.

Under the Barbados Water Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2023, passed in the Senate yesterday, the current system of numbered zones will be replaced with letters.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for Culture, Senator Dr Shantal Munro-Knight, said this was a “major amendment” to the legislation designed to transform and modernise the BWA.

Leading off debate on the bill, Munro-Knight said Barbados’ was currently governed by the National Ground Water Protection and Zoning Policy which came from a 1963 study commissioned by Government to look at what was happening with the water system.
