Barbados has a new woman candidate master in chess – Hannah Wilson.

The newly crowned National Sports Council (NSC) Junior Sportswoman Of The Year was notified of her new title on Friday, after new rating and title regulations came into effect by the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

Rated tenth best of active players in the country, with a standard rating of 1 674, the 14-year-old Queen’s College student is also the highest-rated active female player from Barbados.

In the all-time rankings, Wilson ranks fourth among female chess queens of Barbados, behind Rashaana Blenman (2050), Nathali Greenidge (1968), and Corinne Howard (1730).

She becomes the sixth Barbadian woman to boast a candidate master designation, following woman FIDE master Donna Murray (1364), and women’s candidate masters Julissa Figueroa (1667), Katrina Blackman (1641), Sheena Ramsay (1514), and Lydia Nurse (1282).(RW)
