Barbadian Olympic sprinter Mario Burke narrowly missed out on the qualifying standard for the 60 metre sprint at the upcoming World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland from March 1-3.
On Friday, Burke clocked 6.59 seconds to win the 60 metres final at the Howie Ryan Invitational at the Yeoman Fieldhouse in Houston, Texas.
However, his performance was 0.01 seconds off the standard of 6.58 required to reach the World Indoor Championships.
With the qualification deadline set for next week on February 18, Burke will have one more chance later this week to hit the mark for Glasgow 2024.
Back from a long injury layoff, Burke has turned out in three meets for the indoor season, running 6.62 twice in the finals of the Robert Platt Invitational and the Texas A&M Charlie Thomas Invitational, before his season’s best performance of 6.59 seconds on Friday.
He last represented Barbados at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games which were postponed to 2021 due to the prevalence of te COVID-19 pandemic, however his debut Olympic appearance came to an early end due to injury in the first round in the men’s 100 metres.
Burke’s 60 metres personal record stands at 6.55 seconds, attained five years ago in Birmingham, Alabama.
