Barbadian Aaron Jones smashed an explosive unbeaten 94 off 40 balls to guide United States to a comfortable by seven wickets over Canada in the first match of the International Cricket Council Men’s T20 World Cup on Saturday night.
Before excited home fans at the Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium in Dallas, Texas, Jones belted ten sixes and four fours as United States chased down a target of 195 for the loss of three wickets with 14 balls to spare.
The 29-year-old Jones, a former student of Bayley’s Primary and Christ Church Foundation, linked up with Andries Gous in a third wicket partnership of 131 in 9.1 overs after Canada kept United States in check at the start of the chase.
Gous made 65 off 45 balls and helped Jones in lifting United States after they had had been restricted to 41 for one in the first six overs.
Another Barbadian, Nicholas Kirton, played a key role in helping Canada to 194 for five after they were sent in.
The left-handed Kirton made 51 from 31 balls while opener Navneet Dhaliwal topscored with 61 off 44 balls. (HG)
