NUPW queries delayed incentive bonus for SSA staff

The National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) is calling on management of the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) to let workers know when they will be getting a promised incentive bonus.

In a media release yesterday, it said the nondisbursement of the money was creating difficulties because the “legitimate expectation of the SSA workers has been raised and they are incensed over the delay in receiving the promised funds”.

It stated that on March 5, there was a meeting between the NUPW and SSA management, with the latter indicating Government would be allocating $1 million as an incentive, with productivity being one of the criteria.

Inadequate amount

The NUPW said its representatives indicated at that meeting the amount was inadequate, and in turn submitted a proposal for the money to be paid across the board in a lump sum.

A second meeting was held with management on July 9 to discuss the lump sum payment but the union said the SSA maintained its original stance.

The NUPW said it was informed the money has not been allocated to the SSA as yet “and there is uncertainty about when this will occur”. It appealed to management to release the money.

Workers protested the non-payment of the incentive on June 10, with the NUPW at that time stating the issue was still under negotiations.
