Lara: WI should expect a fight

West Indies cricket icon Brian Lara has urged the Caribbean team to steel themselves for the intense atmosphere of Edgbaston, as well as the formidable challenge posed by England’s white-ball side, when the two teams meet in Birmingham next May.

Lara, who accumulated 10 405 runs in 299 One Day Internationals, is no stranger to the fervour at Edgbaston, having graced its packed stands throughout his illustrious 17-year international career. He believes the outcome of the match on Thursday, May 29, 2025, may well depend on how West Indies’ relatively inexperienced batting line-up copes with both the pressure of the occasion and England’s aggressive style of play.

“Every time I played here for the West Indies, it was always a full house,” said the 55-year-old during a recent visit to Edgbaston to mark the 30th anniversary of his record-breaking 501 not out for Warwickshire. “It’s tough to draw big crowds in the Caribbean, but here in England and places like Australia, cricket is a true spectator sport. Thousands of people are watching, and the players will have to rise to the occasion.”

While the West Indies boast a formidable bowling attack, their batting line-up is far less seasoned. Of the top five batters from their last ODI against Australia, four have a combined experience of just 35 matches. However, their captain, Shai Hope, stands as a pillar of reliability, with an ODI average exceeding 50, placing him among the world’s most prolific white-ball cricketers.
