An advertisement by the Electoral and Boundaries Commission (EBC) has added fuel to speculation that a general election could be around the corner – the third in seven years.
However, noted political analyst Peter Wickham does not believe that is the case as constitutional reform still has to take place. Similarly, his counterpart, Dr Kristina Hinds, has dismissed the annual publication as any signal while political scientist Devaron Bruce called for election dates to be legislated.
In the “first public notice” last Thursday, the EBC informed of the deletion of names from its Register of Electors published on January 31, 2024. The notice intensified rumblings that the country might be building momentum from the nostalgic We Gatherin’ festival, chiefly encouraging Barbadians and descendants to “come long home” in celebration of our roots but with a heavy push on investing to boost the economy.
The ruling Barbados Labour Party (BLP) led by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley is regarded as having the advantage over its long-time rival, the disorganised Democratic Labour Party, led by Opposition Leader Ralph Thorne, Member of Parliament for Christ Church South, who defected from the BLP almost a year ago.
