Minister of State in the Attorney General’s Office with responsibility for crime prevention Corey Lane was released last night after being interviewed by police for about six hours.
His attorney, King’s Counsel Michael Lashley, declined to give the nature of the complaint that was made against the Member of Parliament for the City and by whom.
“I don’t want to go into the nature of the complaint at this stage. I don’t think that is important. I think the most important thing is that his liberty is no longer at stake and Mr Corey Lane can continue his job as a minister, serving the people of Barbados,” Lashley told the MIDWEEK NATION outside the District “D” Police Station.
Lashley said he did not know about any charge that could be laid but stood ready to defend Lane if any other complaints were made and to do whatever was necessary within the law to represent him.
For now, the next stage is to take further instructions from Lane, he said.
Lashley admitted that it was not the most comfortable experience for Lane to have to enter a police station and be questioned Around 1:30 p.m. Lane, accompanied by Lashley and attorney Sade Harris, turned up at the Cane Garden, St Thomas station after he spent the morning in the House of Assembly where the Appropriation Bill, 2025 is being debated and the Attorney General and members of his office were in the Well of the House for the second day being questioned and giving an account of their stewardship.
When he arrived at the station, Lane exited the vehicle which was driven by Lashley, at the bottom of the steps and quickly ascended to disappear behind the door to the office. Shortly after, Lashley and Harris followed him.
Several hours later, the legal team reported that no charges had been laid against Lane and they had sat in on his interview.
“He cooperated well with the police, under the instruction and guidance of his lawyers. All’s well. He will be released. By now, he is no longer a suspect in custody. I think this is in keeping with the view that no nobody is above the law regardless of their status or regardless of their occupation,” Lashley stated.
He and Harris anticipated that they will have to brace for social media misstatements along with circulating rumours.
The legal team also took time to applaud the police for their “very professional approach”.
