Defending men’s champions Deacons and women’s champs UWI Blackbirds women ended the first round of the Barbados Volleyball Association’s Division One League on Friday night at the Wildey Gymnasium scoring key wins needed to make a serious bid to retain their titles.

Deacons predictably dismissed Starz Volleyball Club 25-15, 25-13, 25-14 to finish in the second spot with 30 points from a 6/1 record. Their sole loss was to C.O. Williams Foundation United, who finished the first round with at 7/0 record and 28 points.

The Starz glittered intermittently but could not match the brilliance of Deacons’ Ahkeem Mayers, Haile-Emmanuel Turney and southpaw Isaiah Francis.

The Starz, who have deceived opponents by playing an apparently innocuous but winning style of volleyball, finished an impressive third heading into the second round with 20 points from a 4/3 record. (KB)
