In a poignant appeal for assistance, Keritha Gittens is confronting the arduous challenge of covering the medical costs for her 23-year-old daughter Kerishaw Gittens, who suffers from Grave’s disease – a rare autoimmune disorder affecting the thyroid gland.

Kerishaw was diagnosed at the tender age of 16 and the diagnosis brought a seismic shift in her once vibrant life.

“It was life-changing. She went from [being] a very active, fun-loving child that remembers everything
to a child that does nothing and went nowhere,” Keritha lamented, her voice heavy with emotion.

The repercussions of the disease have left Kerishaw feeling withdrawn and fatigued, battling not only physical symptoms but also mental health issues such as depression and brain fog.

“She was having a slight depression and had something called a mind fog, but she remembered nothing. So we had to start from scratch,” her mother explained.

Despite the family’s efforts, the consequences of the disease have taken a substantial financial toll.

“For too long, it caused her heart to have a slight murmur,” Keritha disclosed.

With blood pressure readings soaring – 150 over 100 as opposed to the normal 120 over 80 – her daughter’s condition is a matter of serious concern.

“Her pulse was 130 and rising,” Keritha added, highlighting the urgency of her daughter’s medical needs.

Over the last seven years, the Gittens family has faced the daunting costs of treatment, including surgery and ongoing medications, leading to financial strain. The monthly cost of the medication, Antioxin, has exploded from $100 to a staggering $340. In addition, they are still trying to cover the fees for a crucial surgery to remove her total thyroid gland.

“Her surgery was $25 000 and that was only for the surgery. That does not include ongoing upkeep, like blood work every six weeks to determine her dosage,” Keritha explained, underscoring the relentless nature of ongoing care. Given that Kerishaw requires medication for life, the financial burden is overwhelming.

“She is due to have another blood test in another three weeks so we can see if she needs to be on the medication. Or she can be off of it, so that is the prayer that we are asking for now,” Keritha said.

In a bid to raise funds for her daughter’s medical needs, Keritha hosted a picnic fundraiser at Batts Rock Beach, St Michael, on the anniversary of Kerishaw’s first radiology. The event brought together family and supportive friends, while raising awareness about the seriousness of Grave’s disease.

“The aim was to raise $3 000 . . . We are planning a future fundraiser to help with the remainder,” Keritha shared.

With a daunting goal of $25 000, Keritha revealed they need an additional $9 000 to cover outstanding medical bills and other expenses.

“Any help we can receive is greatly appreciated. We are genuinely in need,” she pleaded.
