Haitian singer, US pianist to jazz it up

Haitian American vocalist Pauline Jean and American jazz pianist Aaron Goldberg will be the Barbados Jazz Society’s featured artiste on Wednesday when lovers of jazz internationally, celebrate UNESCO International Jazz Day.

Jean, described as “a multicultural artiste whose repertoire incorporates rhythms of the African Diaspora with elements of jazz, world and western contemporary styles,” has performed in Switzerland, Estonia, Lebanon, Finland, United Kingdom and various Caribbean islands. Between international engagements, she has performed at the Blue Note, the Iridium, Lincoln Centre in New York and other venues across the United States.

Goldberg is an American jazz pianist. The New York Times described him as a “post-bop pianist of exemplary taste and range”.

The event at Sweetfield Manor Boutique Hotel at Britton Hill, St Michael, is part of the Barbados Jazz Society’s week of activities organised to highlight the global significance of jazz and its impact on culture and society.

Music workshop

A “jazzy” church service at Christ the King Anglican Church at Rock Dundo, St Michael, on Sunday and a music workshop at Barbados Community College on Tuesday are other events planned in recognition of International Jazz Day.

President of the Barbados Jazz Society, Dale Thorpe, also told Buzz on May 5, the society will be collaborating with the United Kingdom of the Netherlands Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago, Cor Hersbach, in the celebration of Koningsdag (King’s Day).

The event being held in Barbados for the first time and scheduled to take place at Sweetfield Manor Hotel. It will feature performances by Dutch musicians Michiel Borstlap, Hershel Rosario and Marlon Conrads, making for “a unique cultural exchange and celebration”.
