Parliament is debating an amendment that will lead to regulations cracking down on heavily tinted vehicle, announced by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley since September last year.
Running afoul of the regulation whenever it is imposed will lead to a $500 ticket and $10 for each day the tint remains.
This is part of the regulations coming as Parliament debates the Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill which will lead to ministerial intervention on the matter. Attorney General Dale Marshall, who is piloting the Bill, stated that the tint intervention is in accordance with the request of police, in order to protect them and the public from situations where officers are uncertain about what they are facing when stopping a vehicle.
The police, he said was already in possession of the best tint to ensure that the back car windows are in the range of 25 per cent tint, 20 per cent in the case of the front driver and passenger side windows and 70 per cent in the case of wind screens.
Marshall stated that the requirement for the tint standard will not apply to vehicles used by the President of Barbados, the Prime Minister, the Barbados Defence Force, the Barbados Police Service, the Barbados Prison Service, ambulances, vehicles transporting human remains. Those with medical reasons such as eye or skin conditions will be exempted at the minister’s discretion as provided in the law whenever it is proclaimed. (AC)
