Stefan Newton, former special envoy of the Democratic Labour Party, is urging the Government to take decisive action in the face of escalating violent crime.
While thanking the Nation for keeping the public abreast of the prevailing conditions in Barbados, Newton is calling for a national dialogue on the reintroduction of harsher penalties, including the death penalty, and for practical measures to enhance the safety and confidence of law-abiding citizens.
“We are witnessing a grave assault on the rights, dignity, and safety of our citizens.
“The recent horrific incident involving the rape of a grandmother has not only shocked the nation, but has brought into sharp focus the climate of fear in which many Barbadians now live.”
He questioned how are law-abiding citizens expected to defend themselves against street robberies, home invasions, and escalating violence.
“How are the women of Barbados to feel safe in their own communities? Are we to leave them vulnerable and unprotected in the face of such brutality?” he asked.
Newton emphasised that the country stands at the crossroads.
“The time has come to get tough on crime. We must urgently consider the reintroduction of strong deterrents for those who would terrorise our people, and ensure that those who seek only to live in peace and security are not left at the mercy of criminals.” (SG)
