GEORGETOWN, Guyana –  A 23-year old woman and her 24-year old common law husband have been remanded into custody after they were charged with the murder of her mother whose body was dumped in a trench several miles away.

The police said auto electrician, Austin Ramchand and his girlfriend, Saffia Mohamed, have been charged with the murder of 48-year old Jenny Mohamed.

They were not required to plead to the indictable charge and were remanded to prison until August 4, this year when they would return to the Vigilance Magistrates’ Court.

Police said the duo, who reside in Mon Repos, a small village that was known for its sugar and rice cultivation, stabbed the woman multiple times, placed her body in a large black garbage bag and wrapped it and dumped in a trench off the new Eccles Highway near the intersection that leads back to Ogle, East Coast Demerara.

Initially, the woman’s disappearance had been treated as a missing person, but police said they found human blood at her home in East Coast Demerara. The police said the accused later led them to the area where Mohamed’s body was dumped.

Police said they confessed to killing the woman because she was abusive to them.

“On June 19, 2025, while in custody, the deceased woman’s daughter, under further questioning, confessed that she and her common-law husband murdered the deceased on June 10th, 2025 and gave a detailed description of the killing, by stabbing and strangling Jenny with a rope.

“Subsequent interviews and confrontations were held with the son-in-law and husband, where the son-in-law subsequently admitted and confirmed his role in the murder and disposal of the body,” the police added. (CMC)
