Scores of mourners from basketball and almost every sporting discipline in the island turned out yesterday to pay tribute to basketball legend George Shepherd at the Gymnasium of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, Wildey.

Shepherd, who passed away on May 23 at age 79, was small in stature and of a quiet disposition, but he left massive footprints in Barbados’ sporting arena.

He was credited for “single-handedly rejuvenating inter-school basketball” and his voice boomed throughout the region as a guru of basketball. A former National Sports Council coach, Shepherd also made a tremendous impact in the anti-doping field after retiring as a senior NSC coach.

Among those turning out for the ceremony was former NSC director Erskine King, present director Neil Murrell, former managers of the National Stadium West Indies cricket legend Joel “Big Bird” Garner and Franklyn Gill, former senior coach Anna Shepherd, many of the former Tri-Stars and Heat players, representatives from the Modern High School and members from the Macaws netball team. (KB)
