Three new compact trucks are expected to significantly boost the Sanitation Service Authority’s (SSA) ability to collect garbage in some of the urban areas with small roads and tight turns.
The Maria Holder Memorial Trust handed over the three vehicles yesterday at the SSA in Wildey, St Michael.
Trustee Peter Symmonds said this underscored their commitment in contributing to a cleaner Barbados.
“These compact garbage trucks will be able to navigate . . . the smaller access roads and, in particular, the densely-populated areas in Barbados; where, as we have noticed over the years, garbage build-ups – and I will add illegal dumping – are persistent challenges which the SSA faces,” he said.
“I hope you can get in the very narrow passageways, roadways, get Barbadians to move the cars that are parked illegally in some instances, or indiscriminately in other instances, at the side of the road. Perhaps you may need to work with the police or find other ways through regulations or legislation to ensure that these trucks and all other trucks of the SSA can meet the demands of Barbadians by getting into the areas and removing the garbage.”
No price tag was given for the donation.
SSA public relations officer Carl “Alf” Padmore said navigating some of the tight corners and crowded neighbourhoods has been a challenge for the authority, but this donation would make the job easier.
