UNITED NATIONS – Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has held talks with the President of the Transitional Presidential Council of Haiti, Laurent Saint-Cyr, and the Barbados Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
“Prime Minister Carney and President Saint-Cyr discussed the ongoing crisis in Haiti and Canada’s support for the United Nations Security Council Resolution led by the United States and Panama,” the Canadian government said in a statement, adding that Carney emphasized the need for “mechanisms to better support Haiti in this crisis”.
Haiti has been plunged into a socio-economic and political crisis ever since the assassination of President Jovvenel Moise in July 2021 with criminal gangs, seeking to overthrow the provisional government, in control of nearly the whole of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
Their actions have led to the deaths of thousands of people and the evacuation of many others.
The statement said that Prime Minister Carney also underscored Canada’s commitment to helping re-establish peace and security in Haiti, as well as to “supporting a political transition process based on integrity and the principles of good governance”.
During his meeting with Prime Minister Mottley, both leaders discussed their interest in renewing the Canada-Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Strategic Partnership to diversify trade and strengthen regional security co-operation.
The statement said that the two leaders also discussed pressing global issues, including the situation in Haiti and “agreed that expanded international support is required to bring long-term security and stability to the country.
“The prime ministers agreed to remain in close contact, including at other multilateral forums this fall,” it said.
On Tuesday, Mottley met with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau with the Principal Deputy State Department Spokesperson, Tommy Pigott, saying that Landau thanked Mottley for her “strong support of the UN mission in Haiti and leadership in promoting regional stability.
“The Deputy Secretary reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to working closely with Barbados to promote security and prosperity in the Caribbean,” Pigott added. (CMC)
