There are plans to introduce domestic terrorism legislation and to refurbish every police station across Barbados within the next 13 months, as part of a comprehensive national security overhaul to strengthen public safety.

That was the word from Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley while addressing the Barbados Labour Party’s annual conference on Saturday in Queen’s Park, The City.

She disclosed that a draft Domestic Terrorism Bill will soon go before Cabinet, describing it as a critical measure to address acts of violence that have gone beyond ordinary crime to “terrorise a country and breed fear across the society”.

“When you leave your house or your church on a Sunday morning, you must be able to go into a gas station or buy a Frutee without fearing that you are going to meet somebody spraying bullets,” Mottley declared to loud applause from party faithful. “They are not simply committing a crime, they are terrorising a country and they must be held accountable for that. No handful of people can be allowed to hold this country to ransom.”
