Rethink global finance, PM urges

The world is sliding backwards, warns Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, as she calls for a radical rethink of global finance to prevent Barbados and other vulnerable nations from being crushed by converging crises, including the war in the Middle East.

Mottley, who is leading Barbados’ delegation to the Annual Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Washington, DC, United States, this week, lamented that she found herself “giving the same speeches and saying the same thing that I said six, seven years ago”.

“Particularly on some areas that I thought we had made progress on, we’re going back to ground zero,” the Prime Minister declared.

She was speaking on Tuesday at the Brookings Institution’s Falk Auditorium in DC during a discussion hosted by Brookings’ Centre for Sustainable Development and the United Nations Office for Partnerships.
