Durant blames absentee fathers

A senior pastor has pointed to absentee fathers as one of the root causes of delinquent behaviours among young men.

Apostle Dr David Durant told the Sunday Sun in an interview that even as mothers manage single-parent households, the void left by fathers has resulted in young men searching for father figures on the block and in gangs.

“A lot of fatherlessness is involved, because I’ve spoken to many inmates when I visited the prison to counsel and most of them are without fathers. When I said, ‘What relationship do you have with your father?’ . . . they bow their heads.

“So a mother raised them and maybe a mother has to work, so the young man was left alone. The guys on the blocks called him in so he could be a foot soldier and that is some money coming his way. It’s a community that embraces him, too, and shows him that he is valued,” he explained.

  1. All too common. How does a mom look after the kids when she is working sometimes three jobs to put food on the table. Minimum wage has to go up too. Where is the incentive to work a job that doesn’t pay enough to live when you can make fast cash selling drugs?
