Call for Queen’s Park to be renamed after Sir Garfield Sobers

The Caribbean Movement for Peace and integration has called for Queen’s Park to be renamed in honour of late National Hero Sir Garfield Sobers.

General secretary David Denny, in a tribute to Sir Garfield, who passed away on Friday, said it should be renamed the Sir Garfield Sobers Park and his remains buried there so Barbadians and visitors alike can freely visit and pay tribute.

The statement follows in full:

The Caribbean Movement for Peace and Integration in Barbados joins the people of Barbados, the Caribbean, and the world in mourning the passing of His Excellency Sir Garfield Sobers — one of the greatest cricketers to have ever lived.

Sir Garfield Sobers, a son of Barbados, made our nation immensely proud. His extraordinary cricketing contribution and world-renowned records brought global recognition to Barbados and set a standard of excellence that will inspire generations.

On behalf of the Caribbean Movement for Peace and Integration, we extend our deepest solidarity and heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Sir Garfield Sobers during this time of great loss.

In recognition of his immense legacy, we call on the Government of Barbados to:

1. Rename Queen’s Park in Bridgetown, Barbados to Sir Garfield Sobers Park and;

2. Organise for his burial in this park, so that both Barbadians and visitors to our island can freely visit and pay tribute to the grave of His Excellency Sir Garfield Sobers in the park named in his honour.

Sir Garfield Sobers belongs to all of us. Let us honour him in a way that reflects the pride he brought to Barbados and to the world.

May he rest in power and peace. (PR/SAT)
