Barbados has an ageing population, and as more people live longer, the conversation about growing older is becoming increasingly important.
Growing older is about how we choose to live the years ahead: staying active, discovering new interests and continuing to contribute to family and community.
Across Barbados, seniors are showing that getting older does not mean stepping away from the things that give life meaning. Some are still working, volunteering or serving their communities, while others are exercising, travelling, nurturing their families, pursuing hobbies or simply enjoying more time to do the things they love.
In this six-page special, Celebrating Our Seniors – Ageing with Purpose, Living With Passion, we look at some of the ways older Barbadians can make the most of this stage of life.
We meet 78-year-old Audrey Hunte-Cox, whose competitive spirit and love of sport remain as strong as ever. Gerontologist Dr Lana Husbands looks at why ageing should not be treated as a disease and how older adults can maintain their independence. Dietitian Stacia Whittaker shares practical advice on eating well as we age, while our final feature explores the importance of purpose, connection and finding reasons to keep looking forward.
Growing older is something none of us can avoid. But with the right support, healthy habits and a sense of purpose, the years ahead can still be filled with movement, connection, discovery and joy.
