LUTHER THORNE will clash with last year’s losing finalist St Stephen’s in the first semi-final of the Bico-sponsored National Sports Council’s Primary Schools football competition at the National Stadium today at 10 a.m.
The boys from Luther Thorne ensured their place in the last four with a tense 1-0 victory over St Elizabeth in their final second round play-off match at the National Stadium, yesterday, courtesy of a goal by Donte Niles.
It meant that they finished the second stage on seven points, the same as St Cyprian’s and Ellerton, but have advanced on a superior goal difference. Ellerton ruined their chancesof qualifying when they lost 1-0 to All Saints in another game yesterday.
Unbeaten St Stephen’s had already booked their passage with seven points from two wins and a draw, edging Hilda Skeene, who had two wins and one loss. Hilda Skeene suffered a 1-0 defeat against the same opponents, the only time they had conceded a goal while scoring a tournament-high 42 goals.
The other semi-final will see defending champions St Gabriel’s squaring off against West Terrace at 11 a.m.
St Gabriel’s, who have also played unbeaten, had three victories and a draw in their second round play-off group for ten points, while West Terrace won three matches and drew one in the second phase, to amass seven points.
The final is scheduled for next Thursday at the National Stadium, following a penalty kicks shooting competition and the third place match. (EZS)
