BARBADOS’ TOP TENNIS PLAYERS will be available for Davis Cup duty.
They and their embattled non-playing captain.
Besieged national coach Kevin Yarde has been reinstated as head of the Davis Cup squad for the opening round in Panama, following last month’s player dispute over trial selection that nearly led to his temporary suspension.
Barbados Tennis Association president Dr Raymond Forde yesterday confirmed Yarde’s reinstatement. Barbados No.1 Haydn Lewis and fellow overseas-based player Anthony Marshall have been named to the four-man team, which includes local players Seanon Williams and Ryan Moseley.
The under-fire Davis Cup captain was facing a possible suspension after he initially failed to invite Moseley and fellow highly rated local player Duncan Evanson to the eight-man trials, which subsequently led to an emergency players meeting with Forde.
And out of that meeting came a proposal to sack Yarde, a member of the selection committee, and have written criteria put in place for both trials and selection for any travelling squad.
However, Yarde survived the subsequent committee hearing while Forde reasoned that the criteria would be made available within the next two weeks before the team travelled to Panama on June 28 for the opening of Group 4 play. (JM)
