Barbadians may be under-investing in the future of technology and still considering certain jobs as a last resort. But according to Director of the Shridath Ramphal Centre for International Trade Law, Policy and Services at the University of the West Indies, Dr Keith Nurse, the animation sector is one that is already on the rise.Nurse, addressing the official opening of The Living Screen at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination recently, said too many people were still thinking that jobs in medicine and those in offices were the way to go, when jobs like those in the animation sector were now fuelling the future of the economy. He was at the time speaking at an opening workshop where those interested in learning the art of animation would have benefited from the training by Toon Boom, a top rated animation company. The director said training in fields like this was a step in the right direction and noted that animation could be used to produce a product to “political clients”, or even utilse the animation sector for social transformation.Suzanne Phillips, steering committee member from the Barbados Animators Network & Guild (BANG), said their mission was to engage, mobilise, educate, produce and develop a vibrant animation sector, which offered a chance to showcase talent and also cultivate employment.Director for the National Council of Science and Technology Lennox Chandler in his short speech noted the workshops would provide training for young people.(CT)
