IT WILL change the landscape of St Lucy and Barbados. That’s the vision Member of Parliament (MP) Denis Kellman has of the massive housing and town centre development in Pickering.
Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony for Pickering Court, which is a sub-division of Pickering Housing and Town Centre Development, Kellman reiterated that the huge northern estate would translate into housing solutions, employment and shopping facilities for Barbadians.
“As you can see from this project, all we wanted was the land. Now we have the land and we will do the rest once the infrastructure is put in place.
“We will keep that promise once we are sure that we get that small portion. You can give the rest to the other section of Barbados, but always remember that this female parish, the only one, is not only selfish and will not demand of you too much. All we ask for is our fair share,” he said.
Kellman, the MP for St Lucy since 1994, spoke before an audience led by Prime Minister David Thompson, which comprised Cabinet Ministers Michael Lashley and John Boyce, Sir Richard Cheltenham, trade unionist Robert Morris and Chief Town Planner Mark Cummins.
The developers of the project are North Ridge Development Company which has five directors that including former long-standing St Lucy MP Evelyn Greaves and two other Barbadians in Stanley Yearwood and Wayne Cumberbatch. The others are Rayhana Rahim and chairman Yussuf Mohamed, who gave an overview of the project.
Cuban American architect Danny Martinez told specially invited guests that the multimillion-dollar investment would be sustainable, compact, diverse and walkable.Martinez spoke about the components of the neighbourhood which will include town and luxury homes, luxury condos and villas.
The project will include a 200-unit hotel, a private day-care centre, a primary school to accommodate 350 pupils, recreational amenities, heritage parks, greens, lakes, tree-lined boulevards, an amphitheatre and a bus terminal.
