NINETEEN LUCKY Barbadians who are involved in the tourism industry will benefit from scholarships ranging from $700 to $3 800 thanks to the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association Education Foundation (CHTAEF).The CHTAEF was established in 1987 as an independent non-profit organisation which offers scholarships and special assistance for the education of Caribbean tourism industry personnel and students pursuing tourism and hospitality careers. Funds for the scholarships and grants are generated from corporate sponsorship, benefit auctions and golf tournaments.The scholarships were awarded at a ceremony at the Hilton Barbados on Friday night with Hamish Watson from CHTAEF’s selection committee making the presentation along with Sue Springer of the BHTA. The new awardees will benefit from the new work experience programme where they will be attached to another property from five to 15 days expanding their horizons and skills.Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide was the biggest benefactor offering two US$3 800 scholarships to Christina Phillips and Kim Richards while presenting Angela Holland with a $1 000 scholarship. Gina Sealy gained the Patricia Ecke-Pas Memorial Scholarship valued at US$2 500.During the evening Watson also expressed thanks to some of their corporate sponsors like Starwood, FirstCaribbean Bank and Virgin Holidays.
