Writing on a knife’s edge

I AM in a bit of a quandary as to what I should write about.

If I express concern over the political aspects of Islam or the hypocrisy in calling what the Israeli commandos did on the Mavi Marvara a “war crime”, while saying nothing about massacres in Kyrgyzstan; a fatwa would be issued and I would be deemed Islamophobic.

If I affirm the traditional Judaeo-Christian teaching on the issue of same-sex marriage or homosexuality I am homophobic. If I raise objections to abortion on demand, I am a right-wing, religious zealot.

If I affirm Jesus’ teaching (His words, not mine) that He is the only way to God, I am a narrow-minded, intolerant bigot. If I raise issues relating to immigration I am xenophobic.

If I highlight an issue that primarily concerns men, I am a misogynistic bully. Such is the level of public discourse in our declining, hyper-sensitive Western democracies (with Europe leading the way).

No matter how worthy an issue is of debate or discussion a fatwa is issued or the tolerance police start to chomp at the bit. I suppose it’s easier to apply handy labels than to engage in rational discourse.
