Chance for Barbados to have a woman as Prime Minister

I NOTE THAT AUSTRALIA has joined those nations, including our Caricom sister Trinidad and Tobago, that are led by women.

We Bajans will have the chance to elect a female prime minister in the next general election.

I can only hope that Bajans will ignore the spin that is sure to accompany such a decision and vote for a leader based on ability and not gender.

It is my view that Miss Mia Mottley is well qualified to lead this country.

She has already shown that she is calm under pressure (prison fire); that she is prepared to fight for the good of her country (maritime arbitration and death penalty); that she is not afraid to make unpopular decisions in defence of principle (no-confidence motion and the unmasking of Clico).

She has also shown that she is compassionate (her stance on the Prime Minister’s illness); that she has the intellectual capacity to manage the economy (her warning that the Government’s revenue estimates were flawed); and that she has a vision for Barbados that will take us to a new level of self-confidence, development and independence.
