Nurse leads Carlton over UWI

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS Sagicor UWI suffered a rare defeat yesterday, losing by five wickets to TeleBarbados Carlton on the third and final day of third-round matches in the LIME Division 1 Competition. Opener Vonrick Nurse struck a controlled unbeaten 84 as he guided Carlton to a battling come-from-behind win at the 3Ws Oval. Set a target of 174, Nurse fought it out from the beginning and was there to hit the final single. His aggression was also tempered with sound batting in his innings that included two sixes and six boundaries. UWI continued from their overnight 31 for four and were bowled out for 114. Floyd Reifer topscored with 28, while Ryan Austin was not out on 25. The home team, who had a first innings lead of 59, fancied their chances of bowling out Carlton cheaply, but it never materialised. Austin finished with three for 41.– ANCILLE INNISSAT CANE GARDEN: Antonio Greenidge compiled a maiden Division 1 century as ICBL Empire took advantage of an inexperienced Guardian General Barbados Youth outfit to register a commanding innings and 61 runs win.Left-handed Greenidge, who finished unbeaten on 103, and overnight partner Ryan Hinds, hustled the Empire scoring along as the visitors rushed their total from 296 for four to 388 for five declared in only 11.1 overs yesterday.Hinds, 25 not out at the start, raced to 50 from just 27 balls before becoming the only Empire wicket to fall yesterday, bowled swinging across the line against spinner Kevin Earle. After Hinds’ dismissal, Greenidge, who resumed on 58, took centre stage and brought up the coveted ton with a sweetly-stroked cover drive to record his eighth boundary off the 147th delivery he faced.Faced with a deficit of 148 on first innings, the Youth lost a wicket in the first over and never recovered. – WAYNE HOLDERAT WEYMOUTH: Derick Bishop had match figures of eight for 93 as BNB St Catherine crushed Police by 73 runs.Bishop, who took four for 31 in the first innings, returned to grab four for 62 as Police were dismissed for 162 chasing a target of 235.  Bishop got meaningful support from Kayode Pantophlet, who took three for 34. Earlier, St Catherine resumed  on 162 for five but quickly declared at 194 for seven. Police openers Roger Williams and Dwayne Yearwood added 32 for the first wicket but the hosts found themselves at 108 for six. Derwin Thompson and Sadiq Hill added 37 for the seventh wicket to bring some respectability to the innings.Once Hill played on to Pantophlet for 14, Thompson soon followed and despite two lofty blows from Trevor Ifill, Police’s remaining four wickets only realised 17 runs. – EVANS HINKSONAT THE BREWERY: Banks put up stout resistance but eventually succumbed to a persistent LIME team and lost by eight wickets. Martin Nurse, continuing from his overnight 49, batted positively until he fell to a reckless stroke for a gutsy 76. His innings lasted 176 minutes and contained 11 fours and one six from 134 deliveries.Banks lost wickets quickly and were reeling at 128 for eight before a valuable ninth-wicket partnership of 53 off 18 overs between Jamal Phillips (32) and Ramon Sealy (25 not out) extended their second innings deep into the evening, delaying LIME’s quest for a second victory of the season.Banks were finally dismissed for 186,  leaving LIME with a mere 91 runs for victory from a minimum of 21 overs.Leg-spinner Nikoli Charles spearheaded the LIME attack with four for 28.Randy Thomas, continuing his rich vein of form, saw the visitors home with a purposeful undefeated 43.– LINDON YARDEAT TRENTS: A fourth-wicket century stand between Kyle Hope and Rondell Yearwood helped ESA Field Pickwick earn a draw against CGI Maple after a delayed start due to rain.Resuming on 47 for one still trailing by 52 runs, Pickwick rallied to 217 for seven before the match was abandoned as a draw with six overs still to be bowled.Hope, who struck an attractive 87, and Yearwood, who batted responsibly for 44, came together after overnight pair Rommell Small and Jason Gilkes were both dismissed within the first half-hour after play got under at 1:50 p.m with 80 minutes already lost. The fourth-wicket stand of 110 was only broken an hour after tea when Yearwood became the first of four victims for leg spinner Orman Kellman (four for 24).Hope also fell to Kellman, caught at long-on by Kirk Brome after an innings that included two fours and 14 threes off 125 balls. By then Pickwick had done enough to deny Maple the chance of maximum points. – PHILIP HACKETTAT INCH MARLOW: After extremely wet conditions caused the start of play to be delayed by two hours, Caribbean Lumber YMPC and Old Brigand Dover played to a draw.Set 217 to win from a minimum 45 overs, Dover made a spirited chase and reached 188 for seven when the game ended.Earlier, YMPC declared at their overnight 94 for one.YMPC were given a sniff when Jed Yearwood (three for 58) removed the first three wickets early, but Jamar Phillips with 41 and Wilbur Bruce (35) altered the course with a fourth-wicket partnership of 71.  However, both fell in consecutive overs. Phillips struck three fours and two sixes from 54 balls, while Bruce hit two fours and two sixes in 35 balls. Consistent batting by the low-order kept the game alive but Dover had to give up the chase after they lost two important wickets. – ELVIS HOWARD
