World Juniors team ready

YET ANOTHER hurdler will represent Barbados’ best chance of winning a medal at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships from July 19 to 25 in Moncton, Canada.Greggmar Swift, the Central American and Caribbean Junior gold medalist in the Under-20 boys’ 110 metres hurdles, will spearhead the four-member team.Swift, who also won silver at the CARIFTA Games earlier this year, has a personal best time of 13.64 seconds, which ranks him among the top ten in the world. Sadé Sealy, the lone female, will be competing in the 400 metres.The others completing the team are CARIFTA Games 800 metres gold medalist Anthonio Mascoll and bronze medalist Shekeim Greaves in the 200.“From the performances Greggmar did at CAC, his coach [Gabriel Burnett] is convinced he can get on the podium,” said manager/coach Wendy Barrow-Smith.“I expect them to give their best as usual.”They will leave the island this weekend.As they are preparing to leave, the members of the team to the North America Central America and Caribbean Under-23 Championships were due to return home last night.World champion Ryan Brathwaite won Barbados’ lone medal, silver in the men’s 110m hurdles.On Saturday, Rico Tull did a personal best 21.25 seconds in the men’s 200 metres but did not advance to the final, and Stefan Goodridge did not finish his heat of the men’s 400m hurdles.Thorrold Murray wrapped up on Sunday, placing fourth in the men’s high jump with a best clearance of 2.10 metres. The event was won by American Paul Hamilton at 2.23m, with the bronze medalist Jamal Wilson of the Bahamas clearing 2.13m. (SAT)
