PORT-OF-SPAIN – Government intends to clamp down on the number of British nationals employed at the Special Anti-Crime Unit of Trinidad and Tobago (SAUTT) in order to cut back on hundreds of millions of dollars spent in salaries and perks to the foreigners.Security adviser to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Gary Griffith, made the comment over the weekend, as he said more than TT$100 million in taxpayers’ money was spent annually to maintain the officers. He said the former People’s National Movement government had spent billions of dollars in the fight against crime and it was time every single aspect of national security had measurable performance and accountability.Griffith, who spoke with the Trinidad Express from Miami, said officials at SAUTT must show the results for the money spent over the years to hire the foreigners.
