TWO pole-to-pole wins by Jason Harewood lifted him to the top of the standings after two race meetings of the Barbados Auto Racing League (BARL).In the League’s first day/night event at Bushy Park last Saturday, Harewood, at the wheel of the Do-It-Best Quality Paints/Gaskin’s Garage/Genesis Boutique Toyota Starlet whipped the Group 2B field. It included former group champion Robert Gill in the ReZult Auto Shop/Save-A-Lot-Value Supermarket/A.S.AutoStop/Kandy King Toyota Starlet and Owen ‘OP’ Proverbs in the A.S.AutoStop/RallyMax TV Nissan.Veteran Freddy Mapp driving a Ford Escort, Shawn Boxill in a King’s Auto Part/Tropical Tree Services/A&T Marine Toyota Starlet and Winston Grecia in a Mitsubishi Lancer were also in the same group.Harewood, who started the day with 81 points he gained from the Easter race meet, added 54 to his tally before rain brought the day/night action to an abrupt end, robbing fans of the four group races and the HOTT FM Handicap.Three other drivers, Edward Corbin, competing in Group 2C at the wheel of the Corbin’s Garage/Klar-Odio Toyota Starlet, Stephen Elliott in the Marks Auto Spares and LP Services Toyota Starlet in Group 2A and Jermaine Pope in the NKM Clothing/Bio Beauty Day Spa/KDJ Auto Parts/Lucazade Energy Suzuki Swift who took on the opposition offered in ReZult Auto Shop Group 1, all scored two wins during the day’s action.Elliott, the pole-sitter in both races for Group 2, came well-prepared for the strong challenges from group leader Sean Russell in the McCarthy’s Garage Honda Civic, Thompson and William Jones and it was only the rain which prevented him from making a clean sweep.Pope, on the other hand, while having to settle for second place in the first meeting of ReZult Auto Shop Group 1, made few mistakes as he won the remaining two races allotted to the group.Among the other drivers, two-wheel drive lap record holder Stewart Williams in the Williams Equipment Lotus Elise, Sammy Cumberbatch in the Williams Industries/Digicel BMW, Kurt Thompson in NKM Clothing/Bio Beauty Day Spa/Glassesco Honda CRX and Ryan Francis, who won the day’s opener were among the drivers making their presence felt during the day/night event.
