A hand up – not handouts

IT IS SAID Haiti was the first black republic or free people.

That being so, what have they achieved as a people, freed from their colonial masters?

In this 21st century they are considered the poorest in the region.

Why? It seemed over the years, their successive leaders at all times have exploited them, seeking their own aims and keeping the people of Haiti in poverty and squalor.

Apart from natural disasters and recent earthquakes they have been kept wallowing in the mire of poverty and much ignorance.

They are like the man of whom we read on the Jericho road: robbed left for dead.

There have been good Samaritans throughout the years who were very kind to them.

I know of  individuals and groups who have contributed materially and even morally and yet Haitians are still in the slough of despondency, so to speak.

What they need is a real hand up and not so much handouts, and leaders that want to see real progress.

Let us hope and pray that the leaders and people of Haiti, rise up and realise that “righteousness calleth a nation but sin is a reproach to any people” to the Good Book and the Lord of the book.

Let us as neighbours and good Samaritans continue to give our moral, spiritual support and in whatever way we can to awake and help Haiti to a real recovery and true prosperity.

Lord, help us to help them to know true freedom. With God all things are possible.
