Barbadians and other Caribbean residents now have another opportunity to further their studies.Education For Advancement (EFA) has announced the availability of $50 000 in scholarships from its academic partner Ashworth College, a leading provider of accredited distance education in the United States. Through the EFA, they can take classes online from any location and work at their own pace. The scholarship money will be divided to provide one-year full scholarships for up to 20 Caribbean-based students pursuing a degree online in the 2010-2011 academic year.   “We want to empower residents of the Caribbean from all walks of life to earn a degree that will help them advance personally and professionally,” explained John Evans, president of EFA. “We will consider candidates who have proven themselves academically or through their work experience and also demonstrate a financial need.” Applicants can be embarking on their college education or may already have earned an Associate degree. Ashworth College now has agreements with colleges throughout the Caribbean to allow full credit transfer from local associate degree programmes. Applicants can also receive credits for life experience through their careers, the military and even volunteer positions. With an Associate degree or life-experience credits, some students can complete a full Bachelor’s degree in as few as 12 months.   Scholarship winners will have access to Ashworth College’s complete range of self-paced degree courses which include business, management, accounting, finance, early childhood education, marketing and criminal justice “We support EFA’s mission to bring a world-class education to residents of the Caribbean,” said Dr Milton Miller, vice-president of education, Ashworth College. “In these tough economic times, the option of scholarship money can make the difference between someone working on their college degree now or having to delay their educational goals due to limited finances.”   The scholarships cover study materials, textbooks, academic support and access to fellow students in the Caribbean and worldwide. The deadline to apply for an Ashworth College scholarship through EFA is August 31, 2010. (PR)
