Alexandra take Under-18 hockey title

The Alexandra School boys ensured that Barbados retained some honours in the inaugural City of Bridgetown Barbados International Schools Under-18 Hockey Tournament which climaxed at the Wildey Astroturf yesterday.Alexandra prevented an overseas sweep of both the girls’ and boys’ titles by pipping Monkton Senior School in the finals, which was forced into double penalty flicks after the scores were locked 1-1 in full time and extra time. Monkton had scored first in the 33rd minute before Omar Walker equalised three minutes later, four minutes before the whistle.The first set of penalty flicks ended 3-3, but Alexandra sneaked home 3-2 the second time around.  The other boys’ teams which took part in the tournament were Combermere School, Alleyne School and Debe of Trinidad and Tobago.Queenwood of England captured the girls’ title from fellow English tea, Kingswood 1-0. Also taking part were English sides Plymouth and Queen’s School, as well as Alexandra, Springer Memorial
and a National Sports Council squad. (KB)
