MAYAGUEZ – Trinidadian George Bovell smashed an eight-year-old record and Bahamian Ariana Vanderpool-Wallace set yet another mark, as the Caribbean shone in the pool at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico on Wednesday night. The 27-year-old Bovell, who captured bronze at the Athens Olympics six years ago, won the men’s 50 metres freestyle in 22.23 seconds to highlight the evening’s action at the Natarorio RUM swimming complex. His time eclipsed Puerto Rican Ricardo Busquets’ previous record of 22.55 seconds set in San Salvador.Vanderpool-Wallace continued her outstanding exploits when she snatched her second gold medal of the competition by winning the women’s 100m butterfly. The 20-year-old touched the wall in 59.74 seconds to wipe a whopping two seconds off the record she had set earlier in the day in heat one.The medal was Vanderpool-Wallace’s third individual of the games after also winning the 50 metres butterfly in record time on Monday, and claiming silver in the 100 metres freestyle. She has broken four records. (CMC)
