FORT-DE-FRANCE, Martinique – Health officials yesterday confirmed that this French island is experiencing a dengue fever epidemic, the latest Caribbean nation to announce an outbreak of the mosquito borne illness. The Regional Health Agency has been advising all departing airline passengers of the presence of the disease. “You are coming from a territory where an epidemic of dengue fever has been confirmed. This disease is spread by mosquitoes, and causes fever, shivers, muscle pains, and headaches,” the notice distributed to the airlines servicing the island said. “If within one week after your return, you experience these symptoms, please consult your doctor and mention your stay in Martinique,” it added.(CMC)
