Through a strike from Adrian Nichols, Maple defeated South African team Induku 1-0 at the Astroturf.Women’s champions ABC and kings Dyside were both beaten, while mixed champions Rockets were held to a 0-0 draw by Do Badd.ABC slumped to a 3-1 defeat by Deacons. After opening the scoring in the 15th minute, that was not the result they were looking for.Sarah Ennor scored for ABC, but veteran Corlette Kellman struck in the 22nd and 35th minutes, then Angela Thompson sealed the victory for Deacons 13 minutes later.Following in the footsteps of the veterans, the Maple women also started with a 3-0 victory over All Stars, while Bajans Fuh Real and UWI played to a 0-0 draw.In a replay of last year’s championship match, it was former kings Dominion who drew first blood in men’s action with a 4-1 victory over Dyside.In the 8th minute, Rohan Thomas got Dominion on the board, but Keron Taylor cancelled that goal two minutes later. The celebrations had scarcely ceased when Jamar Small struck in the 12th to put Dominion back on top.Ryan Drayton scored again for Dominion in the 17th and Errol Clarke added the third unanswered goal in the 38th minute.Four seemed to be a magic number yesterday in the men’s competition, as Combermere beat BDF 4-1 and Roosters blanked BDF 4-0. Former champions ABC beat Bajans Fuh Real 5-1.
Early lead
Visitors Die Keulen from Germany also had an emphatic 5-1 victory against former vets’ champions All Stars at Weymouth. Christian Smolka’s shot was good in the second minute to give the visitors the early lead.And goals at regular intervals from Arne Dorando (21st), Uwe Hess (31st) and Jens Hilgers (35) kept the pressure on. The final goal came in the 42nd minute. Jeffrey Webb scored the lone goal for All Stars.In their second match, Die Keulen were beaten 2-1 by Barking Dogs.Rain also affected several of yesterday’s matches which have been rescheduled. The tournament continues today at 9 a.m.
