AG worried by road abusers

ATTORNEY GENERAL Adriel Brathwaite is concerned about the state of Barbados’ legal system as it relates to traffic offenders.“Something is wrong,” he said yesterday during a District Emergency Organisation workshop at The St Michael School, Martindale’s Road, St Michael.“How can a guy with 147 convictions still be on the road? Something is wrong with our system. One guy making a living cannot compensate for loss of life. They need to be taken off the road completely,” he said speaking to the SUNDAY SUN.However, Brathwaite said stricter penalties were not something that could be dictated to the courts, but rather something he would like to see.“We have a situation where there are lots of people on the roads without road tax, insurance or licences. So it is not a case of not insuring them because they will still drive. We need to send the right signal when they are caught,” he said.Brathwaite said Barbados was no longer a place where one could enjoy a leisurely drive, as even people who appeared to be on their way to church were moving at “100 miles per hour”.“[This] is a reflection of society where we are now in a hurry to do everything. Used to be one could enjoy a Sunday drive, but not any more. There is a lot of unnecessary aggression,” he said. (CA)
