Bajans among medals in Cup

BARBADOS chess players were among the prizes at the first Umada Cup played in Trinidad recently.Barbados were represented in the Open section by current national champion Martyn Del Castilho, while Under-20 junior champion Akeem Cox and Under-6 champion Allon Richards took part in the Under 2100 rating section.Del Castilho got in the prize money when he placed a creditable fifth in the top section. He struggled early in the tournament, collecting only two points from four games including a loss to top Trinidad junior Keron Cabralis. However, Del Castilho played unbeaten in his last five games and finished with a last-round draw against international master Gustavo Hernandez of the Dominican Republic.In the under 2100 rating section, Cox and Richards fought valiantly in the 70-player field and both players finished in the top half of the field.Cox finished 22nd on five points from nine, but managed to garner a special prize in the under 1900 rating category.
