An additional three Exhibition winners have been added to this year’s 2010 CAPE awardees.Minister of Education Ronald Jones, speaking last Friday at a meeting for parents and the newly awarded 2010 Scholarship and Exhibition winners at the Ministry of Education, revealed that three more Exhibitions had brought the total to 54, after further inspections of the grades.Of these three, Harrison College received two and Queen’s College one, bringing their total to 13 Exhibitions for Harrison College, and ten for Queen’s College. Harrison College also had eight Scholarships, while Queen’s College received 13.Jones said this year’s allocation of Scholarships had been the largest since Government started allocating them many years ago.He said the record number showed that students were striving for academic excellence, and that although the format for Scholarships had changed, students continued to produce high-quality work to reach those standards.“This academic excellence with which you have performed sets a clear example for others to follow, and it shows that our sixth form schools are focused on achieving, but it must not stop here. It has to be continued!” he advised. He also used the opportunity to congratulate the young men who had achieved Scholarships this year.Jones also congratulated the parents for their commitment and dedication to helping their children become successful.“Behind most successful children, there are dedicated and committed parents who would go beyond the call of duty.”The minister told the awardees that Government had this year allocated more than $500 million to education, one-fifth of which he said went towards tertiary education, Scholarships and Exhibitions.“So it is your responsibility to make sure the taxpayers’ money is not wasted. Therefore it is imperative that when you go to your universities that you focus on your studies . . . there is nothing to stop you from having all As or First Class Honours degrees,” he told students.Jones urged the winners to grab hold of their opportunities and to remain true ambassadors for the country while pursuing their overseas studies.
